Vetoes, Free-Times "Best of", Beginning of Summer

June 30, 2019

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

The General Assembly convened this week to address the Governor's vetoes.  Both chambers overrode his veto of H3601, a bill which relates to public disorderly conduct so as to allow and provide procedures for conditional discharge for first-time offenders.  All of the Governor's budgetary vetoes were also overridden except for 4, which were sustained, as follows: provisos allocating monies to the Lee County Bus Shop; allowance of local development impact fees to be used for debt service; monies allocated to Greenwood sewer extension line which are no longer needed; and the sinking of the USS Clamagore. We now will not reconvene until January.

Free-Times has its annual "Best of Columbia" competition which concludes on Sunday, June 30.  There are several noteworthy categories which are worth exploring.  I also happen to be one of five nominated for "Best Local Politician."  If interested in voting, please visit  https://www.postandcourier.com/free-times/best_of_columbia/.

The first days of summer have brought us significant record highs. Please follow these safety tips during these extreme temperatures:

  • Drink water, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Take a bottle with you always.

  • Hot cars kill. Never leave kids, older people or pets in cars. The temperature inside a parked car can double within minutes.

  • Keep cool. Seek out air-conditioned buildings, draw your blinds, use a fan, take cool showers and dress in light and loose clothing made from natural fabrics.

  • Plan ahead. Schedule activities in the coolest part of the day and avoid exercising in the heat. If you must go out, wear a hat and sunscreen and take a bottle of water with you.

  • Check in on others. Look after those most at risk in the heat – your neighbour living alone, the elderly, the young, people with a medical condition and don’t forget your pets.

Thank you for the honor and privilege of representing you and our community at the State House!

Best wishes,
